Shaikh Nasir Bakhsh had a passion for knowledge that he passed on to his descendants. He graduated from the Punjab University in British India with a bachelor’s degree in humanities in 1930 and received a law degree from the same university in 1932. He was fluent in English, Urdu, Hindi, Persian and Arabic. He loved the arts, music and poetry. He had read all the major Shakespeare plays. His favorite English poets were Shelley, Keats, and Byron. But he was passionate about the poetry of the great Urdu poet Muhammad Iqbal who conceived the idea of a separate homeland for the Indian Muslims and played a key role in inspiring the founder of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, to create the new nation of Pakistan in 1947. Sheikh Nasir Bakhsh was a life-long supporter of Jinnah’s freedom struggle for Pakistan. He admired America for its secular, constitutional democracy. His favorite American personality was Abraham Lincoln. He talked about Lincoln as a lawyer and a statesman who led America in its greatest moral, constitutional and political crisis in the American Civil War that led to the abolition of slavery. He motivated and inspired his children with the exemplary accomplishments of Iqbal, Jinnah and Lincoln.
Nasir Bakhsh’s children were all well-educated and pursued professional careers in medicine, engineering, the military, law, business, accounting, and education.
